India Suspends PDP Leader Iltija Mufti's Twitter Account Over Geelani Video
The X account of Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti was suspended in India on Monday. A notice stated it was due to a legal demand. Her party expressed concern about freedom of expression and suppression of democratic voices.
Mufti's suspension followed a police case against unknown individuals for promoting separatism and inciting unrest. The case was filed after she shared an old video of late Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani discussing the importance of Urdu language. Geelani criticized attempts to weaken Urdu's status.
Two weeks prior, Mufti's party protested against the removal of Urdu as a mandatory qualification in revenue department recruitment. She had led demonstrations and addressed a press conference criticizing the move. While sharing the video, she clarified she didn't agree with Geelani's ideology but found his remarks on Urdu noteworthy.
