Iran Reports Massive Civilian Toll, Widespread Destruction in 40 Days of Israel-US Strikes

Iran's embassy in India released figures claiming that Israeli and US attacks over 40 days caused major civilian deaths and widespread destruction across the country. The mission stated that 496 women and children were killed, including pregnant women and minors. Thousands of civilian sites were reportedly targeted in the attacks.

Iranian authorities reported damage to more than 123,000 residential buildings. Schools, hospitals, universities, airports, ports, and transport infrastructure were also attacked. Commercial centers, media outlets, libraries, religious sites, cultural heritage locations, and passenger aircraft suffered damage. Casualties among healthcare workers and Red Crescent personnel were also reported.

The Israeli army said it launched strikes on alleged Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon after a ceasefire was extended. Evacuation warnings were issued for residents of nine towns. A drone was detected entering the Meron area from Lebanon, but no casualties occurred.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sent a letter to Pope Leo XIV expressing gratitude for the pontiff's stance on military attacks. Pezeshkian said US and Israel actions undermine international law and human values. The consequences extend beyond Iran, he added.

US President Donald Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed Iran should not possess nuclear weapons. Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would remain open. He compared the Iran operation to the Vietnam War, noting it lasted only around two months.

Iran confirmed Washington communicated willingness to continue talks. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran remained open to a possible Chinese role in diplomatic efforts. The Financial Times reported a US-backed $40 billion insurance program for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz provided no coverage since its launch.
