Iran's Counterproposal to U.S. Plan for Gulf Peace via Pakistan

Iran has responded to a US proposal aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, with the reply delivered through Pakistan as a mediator, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA. The Iranian response emphasized the importance of ensuring maritime security in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. The US had earlier submitted a 14-point plan requiring Iran to abandon nuclear weapons development and halt uranium enrichment for at least 12 years. Additionally, Iran would need to surrender approximately 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent.

In exchange, the United States offered to gradually lift economic sanctions, release billions in frozen Iranian assets, and end its naval blockade of Iranian ports. Pakistan confirmed it received Iran’s response and is expected to forward it to Washington soon. Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Islamabad noted that both sides face significant pressure to reach an agreement quickly.

The prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is severely affecting global trade and economies, particularly Pakistan, where fuel prices have surged. Given Pakistan’s strong ties with both Iran and the US, it is seen as a key facilitator in advancing negotiations. The coming days are crucial, as the outcome depends on how positively Washington reacts to Iran’s counterproposal. A breakthrough remains possible, but the situation remains tense and highly consequential for regional and international stability.
