Trump-Xi Summit 2023: Beijing Talks Yield No Specific Deals

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump concluded their three-day summit in Beijing on May 15, describing the talks as "historic" and "landmark." The leaders held multiple rounds of discussions covering global issues including the Iran conflict and bilateral trade tensions. They met privately at Zhongnanhai, the secured compound where top Chinese leaders reside, walking through its gardens while discussing matters of state.

Trump characterized his visit as "very successful and unforgettable," claiming both sides agreed on many things and worked out numerous issues. He expressed respect for Xi, calling him an "old friend," and stated the US-China relationship would continue improving. Xi outlined a "new vision" for building a constructive relationship of strategic stability between the world's two largest economies, emphasizing stable economic ties and enhanced cooperation on international matters.

Despite the positive rhetoric, no specific deals on contentious issues were announced. The leaders discussed the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran closed following US-Israeli attacks in February, with both agreeing it must remain open for energy flow. Xi warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could trigger conflicts between the two nations. Trump invited Xi to Washington for September 24.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun declined to provide details about agreements reached, including potential purchases of US oil or rare-earth metal exports. China had previously restricted rare-earth exports in retaliation for US tariffs on Chinese goods. This marked the first US presidential visit to China in nine years, with Trump having been the last to visit in 2017.
