UN Calls for Independent Probe into Rising Deaths in US Immigration Detention

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk called for an independent probe into rising deaths in US immigration detention. Nineteen people have died in ICE custody this year, including five suicides. The detained population has grown by roughly 50 percent, reaching about 60,000. Türk cited concerns over force, solitary confinement, and transparency. DHS denied a spike in deaths, but Reuters found the death rate has more than doubled since 2025.
