Sambhal Muslim Teachers, Headmaster Facing Charges Over Alleged Religious Activities in School; Students Deny Claims

Two Muslim teachers at a government primary school in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district have been booked by police after videos allegedly showing Islamic practices inside classrooms sparked controversy. The case involves PM Shri Primary School in Jalab Sarai village, where viral videos purportedly showed girl students wearing hijabs, boys wearing skull caps, and children participating in Islamic-style prayers. The videos showed students reciting "Lab Pe Aati Hai Dua," a poem written by Allama Mohammad Iqbal.

Following the videos' circulation, the district education department conducted a surprise inspection on May 8. The order identified the accused teachers as Mohammad Anjar Ahmad, the principal on medical leave, and assistant teacher Mohammad Gul Ejaz. Acting headmaster Valesh Kumar was also named in departmental proceedings. The administration accused the teachers of promoting Islamic activities, encouraging Hindu girls to wear hijab and perform sajda, and prioritizing religious activities over academic work.

Pending inquiry, the two Muslim teachers have been suspended and attached to other schools. Police registered an FIR on May 10 under Sections 353(2) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita based on a complaint by Ansul Kumar. However, students have completely refuted the claims, stating they were never forced to wear hijabs or caps. One student said the cap seen in a viral photograph was already in her bag, and she wore it fearing it might get lost.

Another teacher at a nearby school said different prayers and the national anthem are conducted daily while respecting all religions. The suspended teacher Mohammad Anjar denied the claims, stating this was an attempt to malign the school's image and that they only teach according to curriculum requirements. Police said they are investigating the matter and will take further action based on evidence.
