Manipur Woman Alleges Years of Abuse by IIM Bangalore Professor and Wife
A new controversy has surfaced at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. A 23-year-old tribal woman from Manipur has accused a professor and his wife of severe physical and mental harassment. The woman, identified as Naina, worked as a nanny at their residence on campus. She filed a police complaint against professor Amar Sapra and his wife Anshu Sapra.
According to the FIR, the couple allegedly forced her to work long hours without proper rest. They reportedly denied her food and medical care while restricting her movement. Naina claimed she was physically assaulted repeatedly over several years. She stated that her phone was often checked and sometimes taken away.
Naina came to Bengaluru in 2019 through a placement agency. She said the situation worsened significantly from 2021 onwards. She was allegedly made to work from early morning until after midnight. She claimed Anshu Sapra frequently pulled her hair and slapped her even in front of others.
On April 15, Anshu Sapra reportedly beat her multiple times. On May 4, Naina suffered severe pain due to kidney stones. Instead of receiving treatment, she was allegedly locked inside a room without food or water. She later escaped and sought help from a nearby professor. This neighbor provided her with food and shelter.
Her family contacted the Kuki Students Organization Bengaluru, which helped her file a police complaint. Police registered a case under sections related to hurt and wrongful confinement. However, activists questioned why stricter sections were not applied. KSOB president Seilalamuon Haokip alleged that serious charges were deliberately avoided.
Naina also accused the family and agency of wage exploitation. She was promised ₹18,000 monthly but received only ₹10,000. The placement agency refused responsibility. No arrests have been made so far. The institute stated it supported the victim and followed legal procedures. Activists argue the institute cannot ignore years of alleged abuse on campus.
