Cockroach Janta Party: Satire Erupts After Judge's Comment

Abhijeet Dipke, a 30-year-old Boston University graduate, has unexpectedly become the founder of a satirical political movement called the Cockroach Janta Party. This movement emerged after India's Chief Justice Surya Kant compared unemployed youth to "cockroaches" during a Supreme Court hearing. Kant later clarified his remarks, but the comment sparked significant outrage among Gen Z users facing unemployment and inflation under Prime Minister Modi's government.

The movement quickly gained traction, with the party's Instagram account reaching 3 million followers in three days. Over 350,000 people signed up for membership through a Google form. Notable political figures, including opposition parliamentarians Mahua Moitra and Kirti Azad, have joined the party. The party's motto describes itself as "a union of lazy, unemployed cockroaches" and identifies as "Secular – Socialist – Democratic – Lazy."

Dipke, currently based in Chicago, used AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT to build the party's online presence and manifesto. The party addresses issues including voter manipulation allegations against Modi's government and media complicity. Prashant Bhushan, a prominent Supreme Court lawyer, expressed support, stating that India needs a youth uprising against economic inequality benefiting crony capitalists. The movement reflects a tradition of using satire to challenge mainstream politics.

Chief Justice Kant's comments came during a week of nationwide protests by students over exam paper leaks. India produces over 8 million graduates annually, yet unemployment among them stands at 29.1 percent. The party has become what Meghnad S, a YouTuber who hosted Dipke for a stream, called "a giant commentary on Indian political parties in general." The movement represents growing frustration with traditional political formations and a search for alternative experiments in political expression.

Dipke continues organizing social media campaigns while skipping sleep to maintain momentum. He emphasized that people are finally demanding accountability. The party's eligibility criteria include being unemployed, lazy, chronically online, and able to rant professionally. What began as a joke has evolved into something more meaningful for its founder, who feels responsibility to take this moment seriously rather than laugh it off.
