Gurugram Rape Case: SIT Completes Probe, SC to Consider Hospital Lapse and Victim Compensation
The Supreme Court, in a case involving the rape of a 4-year-old girl in Gurugram, directed that the chargesheet be filed before the competent court after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) completed its probe. The SIT was formed by the Court earlier due to dissatisfaction with the Haryana police's investigation. The Court noted that the police initially registered a lesser offense, diluting the gravity of the crime.
The Court expressed concern over the insensitive handling of the case by the Gurugram police, which retraumatized the victim. It also criticized the Child Welfare Committee for their inadequate handling of the matter. The Court directed the CWC members to explain their actions and the Principal Secretary of Haryana to justify their appointments.
During the latest hearing, the Additional Solicitor General informed the Court that the SIT has completed its probe and apprehended the actual culprit. The Court ordered that a copy of the investigation report be supplied to the victim's parents and the accused, with no objections entertained before the Supreme Court. It also indicated that it would examine the conduct of government hospital doctors regarding their possible negligence or complicity in the case, and consider victim compensation.
