UN Warns: Iran Conflict Drives Millions to Hunger

The United Nations World Food Program reports that millions of people are being pushed into acute hunger due to the Iran conflict, confirming earlier warnings about the consequences of escalating war and high oil prices.

According to a recent analysis across three vulnerable nations, an additional 2.5 million people in Somalia, 2.3 million in Afghanistan, and 1.3 million in Sri Lanka are now struggling to meet their basic food needs. The agency had previously forecast that 45 million people could face food insecurity by the end of June, adding to the existing 318 million already affected worldwide.

The acting Executive Director Carl Skau explained that the tight correlation between energy and food prices is the primary driver, as impoverished nations spend nearly all their income on food. When prices rise, people are forced to eat significantly less.

The report indicates the Middle East crisis is generating substantial spillovers, particularly impacting food and fuel prices and disrupting trade. These compounding factors are expected to intensify in the coming months, even if the conflict de-escalates.

Other global hotspots facing food insecurity include Sudan, Gaza, southern Lebanon, Yemen, and Haiti. Due to severe funding cuts, WFP has been forced to reduce aid to millions. Skau urgently called upon donors to increase contributions, especially for Somalia and Afghanistan, warning of massive human consequences without immediate action.
